Getting Started How to Use Microsoft Editor in Word

Microsoft Editor, integrated within Word for Microsoft 365, analyzes your documents to offer suggestions for improved writing. It helps with spelling, grammar, clarity, conciseness, and formality.

To begin, simply navigate to the 'Home' tab and select 'Editor'. Alternatively, use the F7 key. The Editor pane will appear, displaying identified issues and potential improvements.

Reviewing and Implementing Suggestions

To focus on specific areas, such as grammar or clarity, choose a correction or refinement type from the Editor pane. Use the arrows to navigate through each issue of that type.

Click a suggestion to implement it directly into your document. If you're not fond of a suggestion, select 'Ignore Once'. For repeated issues, choose 'Stop checking for this' to prevent future suggestions of that type.

Customization Tailoring Editor to Your Writing Style

By default, Editor checks for various issue categories. To tailor suggestions to your specific writing style, access the Editor pane and choose 'Grammar' in the 'Corrections' section.

In the Grammar dialog, select 'More options (the ellipses (…))', then 'Customize suggestions'. You can then select the issues you want Editor to check and deselect those you want to ignore. Clicking 'Reset to default' reverts to the standard settings.

Additional Tips Tips & Tricks for Maximizing Editor's Potential

Microsoft Editor is designed to refine your writing. Provide feedback via 'Give Feedback to Microsoft' in the Word window.

Editor’s underlines are visible even with the pane closed. Right-click underlined text for options like 'Read Aloud', 'Ignore Once', 'Don’t check for this issue', or more detailed information.

Microsoft Editor is continuously updated to provide you with the best writing suggestions possible.

The Editor browser extension enhances writing on websites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Gmail. Word marks spelling, grammar, and stylistic issues with an underline.

Availability & Settings Editor Requirements and Customization

Ensure you have a working internet connection and that 'Office Intelligence Services' is enabled in 'File > Options > General'. The features available depend on the language being used.

Customize Editor's settings by selecting 'Grammar' in the Editor pane's 'Corrections' section, then 'Options' and 'Writing Style'. In this section, you can select or clear rules to tailor the suggestions to your writing preferences. These settings apply to all the documents you edit.
