Understanding The Outlook Toggle: A Quick Guide

The new Outlook for Windows introduces a convenient toggle located at the top-right corner of the application window. This feature allows you to seamlessly switch between the new and classic Outlook versions.

When the toggle is active (turned on), launching the classic Outlook for Windows or Windows Mail will automatically redirect you to the new Outlook. During the toggle activation, your accounts and settings from the classic Outlook are migrated to the new Outlook to provide a familiar user experience.

Returning to Classic Outlook

If you've switched to the new Outlook preview from the classic version, each attempt to open classic Outlook will redirect you to the new Outlook. You can revert back to the classic Outlook through the toggle in the new Outlook app.

Clicking the toggle in the new Outlook presents two options: 'Switch back to classic Outlook', which prompts feedback and reverts to classic the next time you open Outlook. Alternatively, 'Use classic Outlook this time' opens classic Outlook immediately, ideal for comparing apps or specific workflows. Note: The next time you try to open classic Outlook, you’ll continue to automatically be redirected to the new Outlook for Windows unless you select 'Switch back to classic Outlook'.

Troubleshooting Missing Toggle and Redirection Issues

If you don't see the toggle, ensure classic Outlook is installed. If not, follow the steps in 'You can't open classic Outlook on a new Windows PC'.

If the toggle is missing, troubleshoot by launching classic Outlook from the Windows Start Menu (search for 'Outlook (classic)'). Access the Registry Editor (search in the Start Menu). Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences, locate UseNewOutlook, and set its Value Data to 0.
