Why Google Voice? Overcoming Visual Voicemail Limitations on Unlocked Androids
Unlocked Android phones offer freedom, but often lack carrier-provided visual voicemail. Google Voice provides a free solution, allowing you to read, listen to, and manage your voicemails easily.
This guide walks you through setting up Google Voice for visual voicemail, ensuring you don't miss important messages and have full control over your voicemail experience.
Step 1: Installing Google Voice
Start by downloading the Google Voice app from the Google Play Store. Search for 'Google Voice' and tap 'Install'. Once installed, open the app to begin the setup process.
Step 2: Creating a Google Voice Number
If you don't have one, create a Google Voice number. Within the app, tap 'Search' to find available numbers near a specific city or area. Select a number that suits your preferences.
Note that you can link your existing number to Google Voice, even if you don't plan to use the Google Voice number for all calls.
Step 3: Linking Your Existing Phone Number
Google Voice needs your phone number to forward voicemails. Enter your regular phone number when prompted, and Google will send a verification code via text message.
Enter this code to verify your number. You'll then be asked if you want to use your Google Voice number for all calls. Choose 'No' if you only want visual voicemail.
“With Google Voice, you gain complete control over your voicemails, regardless of your carrier or phone type.

To receive email or text notifications, go to 'Settings' (hamburger menu). Enable 'Voicemail notifications' and choose your preferred notification method (email or text).
Step 5: Setting up Call Forwarding (If Necessary)
You may need to configure call forwarding with your carrier. Instructions vary by carrier (e.g., AT&T, Verizon). Google's website provides helpful examples.
Follow the conditional call forwarding commands for your carrier to ensure voicemails are routed correctly to Google Voice. This completes the setup, and you should start receiving visual voicemail notifications.
